ISSA vs. NSCA: Which One is Right for You?

Latest posts by Lacey Jackson (see all)

I went to a gym for years with a much older demographic. I was easily the youngest person who ever came in. I came in so frequently that I ended up subbing unofficially for things like yoga classes and helping people with their technique. The gym owner eventually took notice, but said I had to be officially certified for him to start compensating me for all the things that I was volunteering.

I didn’t know where to start. There were so many organizations that all seemed, in a hazy 2:00 a.m. search online, to have the same offerings, same certs, slightly different names, and a bunch of acronyms I didn’t understand.

I started asking around and researching, and eventually found out what truly differentiated all of these companies when you dive into the nitty-gritty, and here’s what I have found for ISSA vs. the NSCA.

Right off the bat, these are the best client matches:

ISSA

ISSA is best for the general population, fitness professionals who want to work with seniors or youth, in a gym or online, and want to provide specialized services like basic muscle building, lifestyle changes, or weight loss.

NSCA

The NSCA is best for power lifters, performance-driven clients, and pro athletes with a curriculum that’s heavily focused on periodization, conditioning for specific sports goals, and lifting techniques, making it best for those who want to work in higher-performance fields.

Before making a decision, let’s take a deeper look at what each of their key value propositions are.

ISSA

ISSA, short for the International Sports Sciences Association, is an online fitness and wellness education company providing certs, specializations, and CE for aspiring and working professionals. The organization has certified over a million professionals worldwide since they were founded in 1988, with a variety of certifications and specialty areas that make it possible to focus on nutrition, fitness, wellness, or any combination of the above. Think of a young college grad, high school grad, or older individual looking for a career change, with self-paced study, online exams, and the opportunity to build a career path of their choosing.

7 Key Value Props for ISSA

  • Self-Paced: With their self-paced timeline, you can start, pause, or complete your coursework whenever you have the time with no set classes, and all regular Zoom meetings recorded and stored for lifetime access.
  • Simple Path to Certification: ISSA has structured programs that walk you through from start to finish without having to piece things together yourself, like finding the right study materials, paying for multiple packages of study materials, and then trying to find out which exam you need to take.
  • Multiple Career Paths: ISSA has such diversity that you can take multiple career paths using the same organization, choosing between overlapping options like yoga, wellness, motivation, fitness, recovery, and nutrition.
  • All-in-One Programs: With their bundles, you can combine multiple certifications and get more done at the same time instead of having to enroll in multiple programs.
  • Accessibility: All of ISSA’s programs work well for beginners who are just getting started in the industry, so there’s no prior experience needed, and unlike competitors, you don’t need to obtain the highest level of scientific sports curriculum in order to be an effective coach.
  • Ongoing Cert Options: ISSA is always adding new certifications based on the movement and change within the fitness industry, most recently adding things like GLP-1 and DNA-Based fitness certs, so you’ll have the opportunity to continue growing and building your niche.
  • Flexible Payment Structure: With ISSA, clients have options to use monthly pricing so they aren’t having to pay a massive bill up front in order to start a career. You need only pay your first month to get your certification once you complete the coursework and final exam, repaying the rest of the costs as you move forward coaching.

The NSCA

Think of university professors who always have to move their field forward and contribute journal articles to official peer-reviewed publications. This is the level at which the NSCA operates, as a scientific research arm within the field of fitness, not just a certification provider.

As such, the NSCA is better suited for high-level professionals, people who want the recognition employers require for getting jobs at universities, working with pro athletes, or working alongside doctors. This is a very specialized career path and one for which NSCA’s certifications are well-suited.

7 Key Value Props for the NSCA

  • Evidence-Based Certification: With the NCSA, you get industry-leading credentials like the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and NSCA-Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT), which are often required for high-level coaching and medical-fitness roles, i.e. university sports coach or pro athlete trainer.
  • Research and Education: If you have your membership, you get access to the NSCA’s top-notch scientific research journal, including articles and videos, so you are always on top of sports science changes.
  • Professional Development: The association provides free continuing education units (CEUs) so keeping your certs updated is free and easy ←– This, this literally saves you thousands of dollars each year as a professional.
  • Exclusive Networking: If you have a membership too, then you get access to Special Interest Groups (SIGs)—such as the Sports Medicine/Return to Performance SIG, which is better for trainers working with sports scientists, doctors, or physical therapists.
  • Career Advancement Tools: The NSCA provides career guides, job boards, and opportunities for contribution (such as publishing articles or presenting at conferences) to help you show your employers that you are not only certified in your field, but an active contributor to it, basically the fitness equivalent of a tenured university professor.
  • Financial Benefits: Members receive exclusive discounts on gear in the NSCA Store, event registrations, and further certification exams.
  • Global Community Support: Joining the NSCA connects individuals to a worldwide community of over 60,000 members and certified professionals, which can be good for networking.

Now that we’ve got the basics down, let’s compare the factors I find to be most important when choosing a cert.

Certifications Offered

Certifications can vary widely, so it’s useful to go in knowing (more or less) what you’re looking for.

ISSA

ISSA offers a range of certs, over 20 in fact, with things like HIIT, Nutrition Coaching, DNA-based fitness, Yoga, and CPT.

NSCA

The NSCA specializes in high-level performance certs like the CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist).

Recognition & Career Opportunities

Career Opportunities

But what happens after you get a certification? How likely are you to land your dream job?

ISSA

ISSA is accepted by many major gym franchises. What’s more, they have the Career Connect job portal where you can start messaging available jobs and hiring managers, even going so far as to set up interviews and potentially securing a job contingent upon finishing your certification. ISSA is highly regarded for the sales training and marketing that they include in their certs, making it easy to run an independent business or an online business as a coach.

NSCA

The NSCA is extremely prestigious among sports teams, university athletic departments, and performance centers. Hiring managers often view it as a mark of superior scientific knowledge, so it’s best for securing jobs where this level of scientific specificity is a baseline requirement for a job interview.

Costs

Costs are obviously important although the quality and opportunities, including ongoing benefits, provided by each certifying body have to be considered.

ISSA

Costs for ISSA certifications will vary greatly based on how many certifications you get. Basically, the more you buy at any given time, the greater the discount.

Even then, they have ongoing sales throughout the year that vary from time to time, and once you complete a certification, you’ll probably receive a discount code that you can apply to another certification.

ISSA CPT

Every two years, you’ll have to make sure that you have met your criteria for recertification, which is 20 continuing education units, the cost of which will vary based on what it is you are acquiring. This is an opportunity for continued growth in your field or in a tangential field. For example, I decided to increase the specificity of my coaching with GLP-1 and weight loss management certs that helped me better serve my particular community, a substantial portion of which are postmenopausal women using GLP-1s and looking for weight loss support.

ISSA also provides military members and Veterans between 20 and 30% off all certifications year-round, with exclusive discounts available on the GovX storefront. This can usually be combined with savings like $100 off certifications during Veteran’s Day.

One thing I love is that ISSA doesn’t just extend benefits to things like active duty Army CA or the GI Bill; they also let eligible military spouses receive up to $4,000 in tuition assistance for fitness certifications. It is very rare for similar courtesies to be extended to military spouses, and it’s something I can greatly appreciate. Also, it provides viable, flexible career opportunities for spouses when their husbands are deployed or when the family PCSes.

NSCA

The NSCA has a unique cost structure.

There are no payment plans or installment plans offered so anything you need has to be paid for up front. However, those costs can be brought down if you buy a membership.

NSCA Membership

The membership is really the only reason to pursue this avenue professionally, as it is your one opportunity to access things like free continuing education, research articles, and other key benefits.

Some of those benefits include discounts on your exams and discounts on study materials.  Otherwise, you can buy your exam and study materials separately for your certification, but the cost will be higher as a non-member.

The NSCA makes it possible for certified professionals to access continuing education units for free. This is very unusual within the field, as many organizations require you to recertify every two or three years with 20 continuing education units that you cover out of pocket.

The NSCA also allows service members to get their exam fees reimbursed via the post 9/11 GI Bill.

So, Which is Best?

Both organizations can serve very different career paths and do so successfully. The “best” one is based on what you are looking to do moving forward!

The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) is a certification aimed at advancing high-level professionals, specifically in the fields of strength and conditioning and athletic performance. This makes them an ideal choice for anyone who’s looking to pursue career paths specifically with high-performance athletes or university sports teams, things like sports trainers.

ISSA, on the other hand, is an international organization that provides dozens of certifications, all of which can be mixed and matched to create unique coaching pathways for those who want to coach specific demographics within their community, working in gyms, online, or individually. The multitude of certifications they offer and the regularly provided new certifications makes it possible to stick with the changing tide of the fitness industry.
