Eight Sleep Pod 6 Worth It

Is the Eight Sleep Pod 6 Worth It? My Experience and What to Know Before Buying

I used to think a good night’s sleep came down to having a comfortable mattress, decent pillows, and keeping the bedroom at the right temperature. Then I started using the Eight Sleep Pod 6 and realized how much my preferred sleeping temperature changes throughout the night, and how nice it is to have a bed that can keep up.

Being able to change my bed’s temperature without touching the thermostat has been a pretty nice luxury. Of course, there’s a difference between enjoying something and thinking it’s worth several thousand dollars.

The Eight Sleep Pod 6 starts at $1,999 for one sleeper, while a standard dual-zone setup can cost $2,899 before the required first-year membership. So what are you actually getting for that money, and which features make the biggest difference in everyday use?

The Short Answer

Yes, I’d buy it again. The Pod 6 is expensive, especially with the annual membership, but after sleeping with it for several weeks, I think the convenience and comfort are worth it.

  • What I love most: Autopilot adjusts my bed’s temperature throughout the night, so I don’t have to think about whether I’ll be too warm or cold.
  • What surprised me: The Cover is comfortable even with my sensitivity to firmer mattresses, and I love having separate temperature controls for my husband and me.
  • The biggest drawback: The upfront price is steep, and you’ll need to keep paying for Autopilot to use the features that make the Pod special.

My take: If you only want a cooler bed, there are cheaper ways to get one. But if you want personalized temperature control that adjusts while you sleep, the Pod 6 is worth considering.

What Is the Eight Sleep Pod 6?

Eight Sleep Pod 6 Cover fitted over a king-size mattress in a bedroom

The Eight Sleep Pod 6 is a temperature-controlled mattress cover that fits over your existing mattress. The system has two main components: the Cover, which goes on your mattress, and the Hub, which circulates temperature-controlled water through the Cover. The water heats or cools your sleeping surface, with independent temperature controls for each person on the standard dual-zone version.

Built-in sensors track sleep and health information without requiring a smartwatch or fitness tracker. With an active Autopilot membership, the Pod uses that information to make automatic temperature adjustments while you’re sleeping.

Eight Sleep redesigned the Hub for this generation, making it small enough to fit underneath many bed frames. According to Eight Sleep, the Pod 6 adjusts temperature 20% faster and has nine times as many biometric sensors as the Pod 5.

The standard Pod 6 includes temperature control, sleep tracking, and smart alarms, but some of Eight Sleep’s advertised features require additional accessories. For example, automatic head elevation to help reduce snoring requires the optional Base. The temperature-controlled Blanket and Pillow Cover are also sold separately.

How Much Does the Eight Sleep Pod 6 Cost?

The $1,999 starting price applies to the Solo configuration, which covers one sleeper. For a dual-zone setup, the Pod 6 starts at $2,899. With the required first-year Standard Autopilot membership at $199, the initial cost comes to $3,098.

Eight Sleep also offers Enhanced and Elite memberships at higher annual prices, with additional warranty coverage and health-monitoring features.

Which Eight Sleep Membership Is Worth It?

Eight Sleep offers Standard, Enhanced, and Elite Autopilot memberships. The main differences are warranty coverage and advanced health monitoring rather than temperature control.

FeatureStandardEnhancedElite
Annual price$199$299$399
Automatic temperature adjustmentsYesYesYes
Sleep tracking and smart alarmsYesYesYes
Snoring detectionYesYesYes
Warranty2 years5 years5 years
Advanced Health Check monitoringNoNoYes

All three memberships include the same Autopilot temperature controls. Enhanced extends warranty coverage from two to five years, while Elite adds Health Check monitoring for unusual patterns in cardiovascular and respiratory data.

Personally, I’d consider paying the extra $100 a year for Enhanced to get five years of warranty coverage instead of two. You need to choose that protection when purchasing your Pod and maintain an eligible membership to keep it, which is worth factoring into the ongoing cost.

Here’s how the costs could add up over five years, assuming membership pricing doesn’t change.

ExpenseStandardEnhancedElite
Pod 6 dual-zone$2,899$2,899$2,899
First-year membership$199$299$399
Four additional years$796$1,196$1,596
Five-year total$3,894$4,394$4,894

Spread over five years, Enhanced works out to approximately $2.41 per night, assuming you use it every night. That includes the Pod itself, five years of Autopilot, and the extended warranty coverage. Eight Sleep also offers a 30-night trial with free returns, giving you an opportunity to see whether the benefits justify the expense.

What Happens if You Cancel the Eight Sleep Membership?

The Pod doesn’t stop working when your membership ends. Eight Sleep requires a 12-month Autopilot commitment with every new Pod purchase. You can request cancellation earlier, but it takes effect at the end of your paid billing period, and you’re still responsible for the initial commitment. Once your membership expires, you retain manual heating and cooling for both sides of the bed, but several features become unavailable.

What I Like About Sleeping With the Pod 6

  • Starting Warm and Cooling Down Later: I love climbing into a warm bed, but I don’t necessarily want to stay that warm all night. With the Pod, I can start with a warm bed and have it cool down later, instead of choosing one temperature for the entire night. A heated mattress pad can’t do both, and I especially appreciate that my husband and I can have different temperatures on our sides without changing the thermostat.
  • Letting Autopilot Handle the Adjustments: I don’t always know what temperature I’ll want overnight. Maybe I had a hard workout, ate dinner later than usual, or the weather changed and my bedroom is warmer than expected. Hormonal fluctuations can throw things off, too. What I love about Autopilot is that I don’t have to anticipate any of that. It responds to the room temperature and my sleep stages, making adjustments throughout the night without waking me up to fiddle with the settings. I can just go to sleep and let it do its thing.
  • Having Rapid Cooling When I Need It: Occasionally, I just want the bed colder immediately (hot flashes anyone?). I’ve used the rapid-cooling control for exactly that, and it’s nice having immediate relief without getting out of bed. There are also physical temperature controls along the side of the Cover, so I don’t always have to grab my phone to make an adjustment.

What Is Setup and Maintenance Like?

The Pod 6 is easier to fill than previous generations because you no longer have to remove a water reservoir and carry it to the sink. Instead, you pour water directly into the Hub using the included pitcher. The app walks you through the process, and indicator lights tell you when to pour, pause, and stop. Regular tap water is fine for the Pod 6, too, so there’s no need to keep distilled water on hand.

Once I filled the Hub, the app walked me through priming, which circulates water through the system and helps remove trapped air. It took about five minutes, compared with the roughly 20 minutes Eight Sleep lists for the Pod 5.

After setup, the app lets you know when the Hub needs more water. During my first five weeks with the Pod 6, I only needed to add a little more water once. So far, refilling hasn’t been something I’ve had to think about very often.

Beyond refilling the Hub, there’s a little routine maintenance. Eight Sleep provides a maintenance solution approximately every six to eight months for customers with an active Autopilot membership. The Cover also needs to be spot-cleaned rather than put in the washing machine.

Does the Pod 6 Make Your Mattress Feel Firmer?

I prefer a medium-soft mattress, and my hip is quick to complain if I spend the night on something too firm. So I was a little concerned about adding a cover with water channels and sensors to a mattress I already found comfortable.

When I first put the Pod 6 on, I noticed that the bed felt slightly firmer. It wasn’t a dramatic difference, but I could tell there was another layer between me and the mattress.

What surprised me was that my hip didn’t bother me at all. By the second night, I wasn’t even thinking about the difference anymore. I find the Pod very comfortable and haven’t experienced the pressure-related discomfort I normally associate with firmer mattresses.

Mattress feel is subjective, though. Someone who loves an especially plush mattress may notice the difference more than I did, particularly if they’re sensitive to changes in how deeply they sink into their bed.

What About Sleep Tracking and the Smart Alarm?

The Pod 6 uses sensors embedded in the Cover to monitor metrics including heart rate, breathing rate, heart rate variability, and estimated sleep stages. The Eight Sleep app organizes that information into sleep and health reports, helping you identify patterns in your sleep duration, consistency, and estimated recovery. I like being able to see patterns in my sleep, although sleep-stage estimates aren’t the same as measurements from a clinical sleep study.

The Pod also has a smart alarm that can wake you with gentle vibrations, temperature changes, or both, instead of a blaring phone alarm. What makes it smart is that it tracks your sleep stages and can wake you during lighter sleep within a 30-minute window around your selected alarm time, so you’re less likely to wake up feeling groggy. Since the alarm works independently on each side of the bed, you can also wake up without disturbing your partner. Both the smart alarm and detailed sleep reports require an active Autopilot membership.

Does the Pod 6 Actually Help With Recovery?

Eight Sleep promotes the Pod 6 as a way to support recovery through personalized temperatures and sleep tracking. I like being able to compare my sleep data after different activities, especially on nights when I’ve pushed myself physically.

I wouldn’t say the Pod is directly responsible for better athletic recovery, but getting comfortable, uninterrupted sleep is an important part of it. That’s the benefit I appreciate most.

How Does the Eight Sleep Pod 6 Compare With Other Cooling Systems?

When I compared cooling systems for my king-size bed, I wanted independent temperature control for both sides. That makes a difference in pricing, since some systems advertise a lower starting price for just one sleeper.

Here’s how the three options compare for my setup:

SystemKing Dual-Zone PriceSubscription
BedJet 3$1,549 regularNone
Chilipad 2.0$3,198None
Eight Sleep Pod 6$3,198 with first-year Standard membership$199/year

BedJet is considerably less expensive, but it uses air to heat and cool your bedding rather than circulating temperature-controlled water, and so is limited by the ambient air temperature of the room.

Chilipad 2.0 is a closer comparison, with water-based heating and cooling and scheduled temperature changes. At these prices, Chilipad and Eight Sleep cost almost exactly the same upfront, although Chilipad doesn’t have ongoing membership fees.

Given how close Chilipad and Eight Sleep are in upfront price, I’d choose Eight Sleep for Autopilot and the additional sleep features. Chilipad saves money over time without a subscription, but I appreciate having a system that can make adjustments without me having to plan them.

Who Should Buy the Eight Sleep Pod 6?

The Pod 6 is a particularly good fit for people who regularly wake up too hot or cold, couples who prefer different sleeping temperatures, and anyone who wants more control over their sleep environment without constantly adjusting settings. It’s also appealing if you like tracking your sleep but don’t want to wear another device to bed.

My Verdict: Is the Eight Sleep Pod 6 Worth the Money?

I wouldn’t spend this much money on a bed just to get a better sleep score in an app. For me, the value comes from how comfortable the Pod makes sleeping, especially when my temperature preferences change throughout the night. And after initially worrying about whether the Cover would affect my mattress, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how comfortable it feels.

I’d buy the Pod 6 again, and I’d keep the Autopilot membership. It’s expensive, no question, but I’ve gotten used to having a bed that adjusts to me instead of the other way around. That’s a luxury I’m happy to keep.
